BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men’s tennis’ Isac Strömberg was recognized as SEC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
In the sixth installment of the conference’s weekly awards, the SEC selected Strömberg to be the conference’s freshman of the week following his strong performance in singles over the past week of competition. Auburn’s Finn Murgett was also recognized as the conference’s player of the week.
Strömberg’s recognition comes following a dominant week of singles action for the Stockholm, Sweden, native, with the freshman boasting a perfect 3-0 record on the week playing in the Rebels’ No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. With the wins Strömberg has now increased his singles win streak up to four straight matches dating back to his comeback win against Tulane’s Sam Scherer on February 5.
The freshman opened his week with a pair of straight set victories for the Rebels in the team’s doubleheader against Alabama State, making his debut in the No. 5 singles position for the squad. Strömberg then returned to his usual No. 6 singles spot for the team’s matchup against No. 68 SMU, where he was able to earn the match-clinching win to secure Ole Miss’ first ranked team win of the 2023 season.
With the win, the Rebels have now improved to a record of 7-2 on the season while riding a four-match win streak into their next slate of matches this weekend. Strömberg, who sits at a singles record of 6-2, has now become the first Rebel to receive the honor of SEC Freshman of the Week since John Hallquist Lithen in March, 2021.
Strömberg and the rest of the Ole Miss men’s tennis squad will return to action March 2 as the Rebels will play host to St. John’s at 2 p.m. CT. The Rebels will then prepare themselves for their opening match of SEC play on Saturday, March 4, with in-state rival and No. 18 ranked Mississippi State coming to town. Saturday’s match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT.
