Illini Singles, Doubles Representatives Fall Short on Day 5 of Fighting Illini Open


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois’ singles and doubles runs at the Fighting Illini Open came to an end on Friday, with Kenta Miyoshi falling in the singles quarterfinals and Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins suffering defeat in the doubles semifinals.

The tournament, which is a men’s tennis 25K Tournament on the International Tennis Federation World Tour, will continue at Atkins Tennis Center through the weekend.

Advancing to the quarterfinals of an ITF World Tour tournament for the first time in his career, Miyoshi battled with Naoki Nakagawa, the No. 3 seed in the event, on Friday morning. After falling in the first set, 6-2, Miyoshi fought hard but could not overcome a late deficit, coming up short in the second frame, 6-4, to see his singles run come to an end.

Heck and Ozolins squared off with Jack Anthrop and Cannon Kingsley in their doubles match. The Illini duo were on the losing end of a back-and-forth first frame, falling short, 7-6, before dropping the second set, 6-3.
