Huskies Shutout Ducks, Get To 5-0 In Pac-12 Play

SEATTLE – Washington advanced their win streak to eight after defeating the Oregon Ducks, 4-0, this afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies set the tone early after Jennifer Kerr and Astrid Olsen secured the doubles point for the Dawgs. Melissa Sakar clinched the match for the Dawgs after winning her second set in a tiebreak.

Washington remains undefeated in conference play, at 5-0, just the second time in program history the Huskies have started 5-0, the last time coming in 2019 when UW tied for second with an 8-2 record.

The Huskies took the early 1-0 lead over the Ducks and earned the doubles point after two set wins at second and third doubles. Fortin and Matsuda held it down on court 3 to get the 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Kerr and Olsen clinched the doubles point for the Dawgs, losing only one game (6-1) and defeating Petchey and Young at No. 2 doubles.

The Dawgs moved on to singles and started their matches strong after earning all six first set wins against the Ducks.

Erika Matsuda lost her first game but went on to win 12 straight games in a row. Matsuda defeated her opponent Madisen Olsen, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, raising the Huskies lead to 2-0. Jennifer Kerr added another win to her record after defeating her opponent Karin Young (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4 singles. She advances her winning streak to nine and awarded the Dawgs with their third dual point.

Melissa Sakar gets the clinch for the Huskies after defeating Jo-Yee Chan, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in her second set tiebreak at No. 5 singles. Hikaru Sato, Sarah-Maude Fortin, and Astrid Olsen’s matches remained unfinished with match scores of 6-3, 5-6 at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 0-3 at No. 2 singles, and 6-4, 5-5 at No. 3 singles.

The Huskies will face off against Brigham Young University on Thursday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Provo, Utah. They will remain on the road until they return home for their final home match against their Pac-12 rival, Washington State, on April 22 at 12:00 p.m.
