SOME OLD AND NEW FACES
NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
- Last season, Virginia Tech finished their non-conference matches with a 3-5 record. They defeated ETSU in the season opener with a 6-1 victory and closed out the non-conference portion of schedule with a 7-0 sweep of Radford.
- In non-conference play, the Hokies went 3-1 at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
About the Royals
Queens made their Division I debut last weekend against Appalachian State coming up just short in a 3-4 loss. The Royals rallied after getting swept in doubles play with two comeback wins in singles from sophomore Hanna Axelsson and freshman Katsiaryna Tuliakova. Sophomore Amelie Allard picked up her first victory of the season to set up a decisive match on court one. Junior Jill Morse was able to win the second set 6-3 after dropping the first but ran out of gas in the third.
About the Buccaneers
ETSU comes to Blacksburg with a 2-2 record looking to stop a two-match losing skid. The Bucs started their season 2-0 for first time since 2016 with a pair of wins against Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific. Senior Laylo Bakhodirova and graduate Yunuen Elizarraras shined picking up straight-set singles wins respectively. Redshirt-junior Maria Carvajal leads the team with a 3-1 singles record including a victory against No. 89 Lillian Gabrielsen of Ole Miss.
About the Wildcats
Davidson will face Appalachian State at home in their season opener on Saturday before traveling to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center to face the Hokies. The Wildcats return three players that played in at least 15 singles matches last season. Sophomore Kavya Patel paced the group with an impressive 12-2 singles record.
