CARY, NC — Florida Women’s tennis has successfully completed two days at the ITA All-American Championships and Sophie Williams comes out in fourth place at the Bedford Cup in the Gold Draw.
The freshman duo Malwina Rowinska and Qavia Lopez came out strong for the second tournament of the fall season. The doubles pair won two of their three matches in the pre-qualifiers for the ITA All-American Championships, falling just short in the quarterfinals to Oklahoma State’s Ange Oby Kajuru and Kristina Novak.
Qavia Lopez remained undefeated in the singles draw at Cary Tennis Park, conquering Patrycja Niewiadomsk (Northern Arizona) from the jump, winning 6-1, 6-2 on day one of the tournament. She followed with a win against UCLA’s Elise Wagle defeating her 6-4, 6-3, and closed out 7-6, 6-1 with a comeback victory after being down in the first set against Julia Garcia Ruiz (Oklahoma State).
Emily De Oliveira also had a solid run in singles this weekend defeating all three of her opponents. Her first victory came against 121 ranked Eleni Louka (Clemson), going 6-1, 6-2. In the pre-qualifying round of 64 De Oliveira continued her success defeating Lucie Petruzelova (UNC Charlotte) 6-1, 6-2. Fighting for her final win of the weekend, De Oliveira came back hungry after losing her first set 2-6 to Margaux Maquet (Alabama), grabbing the second set 6-2, and closing the match 6-4 to land a spot in the round of 16.
At the Bedford Cup in Tampa, Sophie Williams found success in the tournament’s Gold Draw, securing two wins against cross state opponents. Williams first win was against Florida State’s Maelie Monfils 6-2, 6-4, and her second came from a split set tiebreaker versus Fanny Norin (FGCU) 6-3, 4-6, [10-7]. Williams ultimately fell in the semi-finals to Annabelle Davis (North Florida) 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 and finished fourth in her draw.
