COLUMBUS, Ohio — Andrew Fenty of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team made history as the first Wolverine to reach 100 wins in both doubles and singles as he hit the century mark in singles play on Sunday (March 19) as the Wolverines fell 4-2 to No. 4 Ohio State in a non-conference match.

After OSU took the doubles point, just the fourth time Michigan has not won the opening point this season, the Wolverines took control in singles play winning first-round sets at Nos. 1 through 4. The tides shifted when two of those went to a third set, wo of which went into tiebreaks.

No. 10-ranked Ondrej Styler won his tiebreak in the second set at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (4) over Cannon Kingsley to go along with a 6-3 first-set win to improve to 15-3 on the season. At No. 2 singles, No. 9-ranked Fenty defeated No. 58 Justin Boulais in three sets. Fenty took the first 6-2 before a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker went to Boulais. Fenty responded with a 6-2 final set to claim his 100th career singles victory.

The match came down to No. 3 and 4 singles, both in third-sets, as OSU took Nos. 5 and 6 to grab a 3-2 lead.

No. 35-ranked Gavin Young came up just short to No. 20 JJ Tracy in a 6-4 third-round set at No. 4. It marked just his third singles loss of the dual season.

The match of No. 17 Patrick Maloney versus No. 26 James Trotter was abandoned with the match tied at 6-6 in the third set.

Michigan begins conference play next weekend with a road swing through Wisconsin on Friday (March 24) at 6 p.m. and Nebraska on Sunday (March 26) at noon CDT.
