LOS ANGELES – The No. 11 seeded USC Women’s Tennis team powered past the Cal Poly Mustangs 4-0 on Friday at Marks Stadium to advance to tomorrow’s NCAA Second Round match.
With the win, USC improves to 19-8 and punches their ticket to the second round of NCAA play. Tomorrow, the Trojans will host No. 23 ranked San Diego at 2 p.m. at Marks Stadium, where a trip to the NCAA Super Regional will be on the line.
USC got to work in doubles with fifth year Eryn Cayetano and freshman Lily Fairclough recording a swift 6-0 victory over Cal Poly’s sibling duo of Peyton and Delanie Dunkle. Next USC’s No. 60 ranked duo of Grace Piper and Parker Fry downed the Mustang duo of Romane Mosse and Melissa Lamette 6-4 to haul in the doubles point. The remaining match on court three was abandoned with Snow Han and Emma Charney leading Kennedy Buntrock and Eliza Bates 5-3 (40-15).
The Women of Troy would carry momentum moving into singles play as the Trojans claimed first sets on all six courts. First to strike was No. 60 ranked Grace Piper, who beat Cal Poly’s Alexandra Ozerets 6-0, 6-2 on court three. Next, No. 33 ranked Emma Charney defeated Peyton Dunkle 6-0, 6-2 to put the Trojans one point away from a win. The match was decided on court five as McKenna Koenig beat Melissa Lamette 6-1, 6-3 to send the Trojans through to tomorrow’s second round of NCAA play.
