9th-Ranked Men's Tennis Dominates Virginia Tech, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, VA.—Brian Cernoch returned to the lineup and won his singles match as the No. 9 University of North Carolina men’s tennis team beat No. 63 Virginia Tech, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon on the indoor courts at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.  

The win improved the Tar Heels to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play this season. Virginia Tech fell to 7-9, 1-5.

Cernoch, the graduate student, Tar Heel team leader and three-time All-America, returned to the lineup after missing his first career match on Friday at Virginia. He beat 70th-ranked Ryan Fishback in three sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Carolina started the day by winning a contested doubles point. Karl Poling and Will Jansen won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles over Alvaro Ariza and Alberto Orzo. The 32nd-ranked team of Ryan Seggerman and Casey Kania upset the No. 13 team of Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom, 7-6 (7-5) for a 1-0 UNC team lead.

Jansen took the first singles win, impressing with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Scott Sculley that made it 2-0 Carolina. Benjamin Kittay continued his recent hot streak, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alex Ix at No. 6. Poling, ranked No. 93 nationally, clinched the team victory with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Cernoch then made it 5-1 with his win over Fishback. Frank Thompson beat Anuj Watane at No. 5 singles, and Seggerman concluded the afternoon with a three-set win at No. 2.

The Tar Heels will return to action next weekend with two more ACC road matches on Friday at Georgia Tech and Sunday at Clemson. UNC’s next home match will come on Friday March 31 against NC State.
