Fenty Falls in Quarterfinals, U-M Wraps Play at ITA National Fall Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Andrew Fenty of the University of Michigan men’s tennis team reached the singles quarterfinals at the ITA National Fall Championships on Friday (Nov. 4), but fell in three sets to end U-M’s play on the West Coast.
Advancing to the quarters marked Fenty’s best singles run at the event. He also qualified in 2019, but fell in the opening round. Facing the No. 2 ranked rookie in Stanford’s Nishesh Basavareddy on Friday, Fenty took the first set 6-3 before Basavareddy answered with a 6-3 second-set win and followed with a 6-4 third set to knock out Fenty.
The No. 42-ranked Wolverine took down Fabien Salle (Louisville) in the first round 6-2, 7-5 and cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 26 Philip Henning (Georgia).
Gavin Young was upended 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 in the first round by No. 65 Jacob Fearnley of TCU.
As a pair, Fenty and Young also won their opening-round doubles match.
The Wolverines duo grabbed a huge 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over No. 2-ranked Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye (USC) in the opening round. Fenty and Young pushed Berk Bugarikh and Patrik Trhac of Utah in the second round going to a long third-set tie breaker. The Utes won the first set 7-6 (5) before Fenty and Young took a 6-3 win in the second. The third set went 28 rounds, with Burarikh/Trhac taking a 15-13 final set.
