WASHINGTON – Former Alabama player Erin Routliffe clinched the doubles title at Citi Open at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center Saturday. Routliffe and partner Jessica Pegula won back-to-back matches on the final day to win the crown at the WTA event.
Routliffe and Pegula took an early lead in the finals with a 6-3 first-set win. After a narrow 7-5 loss in the second set, the pair battled through a 12-10 third-set tiebreaker to win the match and the title.
Routliffe and Pegula earned a spot in the final after winning three matches over the course of the week. The duo opened the tournament with a straight set victory (6-4, 6-1) over Sabrina Santamaria and Heather Watson in the opening round before following with a three-set win of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (9) against Xiyu Wang and Yue Yuan in the quarterfinals. Routliffe and Pegula were leading 6-0, 5-2 in the semifinals before taking the win off of a walkover.
