Duke Wraps Up Non-Conference Play by Hosting Northwestern Wednesday


DURHAM – The 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team will officially close the non-conference portion of their 2023 slate on Wednesday, March 22 as the Blue Devils (15-2, 5-1 ACC) host Northwestern (5-8) at 4 p.m.  The match is scheduled to be contested at Ambler Tennis Stadium on campus.  

The Series with Northwestern

Duke and Northwestern will meet for the 29th time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 25-3.  In matches played in Durham, Duke owns an 8-0 ledger.  The Blue Devils feature a 12-match winning streak against the Wildcats dating back to 2010.  

Blue Devil head coach Jamie Ashworth owns a 20-4 record against Northwestern, including a 10-1 mark at home.

Scouting Northwestern

Northwestern owns a 5-8 ledger on the season and has dropped four out of its last five matches with the victory coming against No. 72 Indiana (5-2).  Claire Pollard is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA tennis compiling a 481-160 ledger over 24 seasons.  

In the latest ITA rankings, Christina Hand is ranked No. 109 in singles, while Hand and Justine Leong are No. 42 in doubles.

The Blue Devils will welcome back 2019 Duke graduate Ellyse Hamlin, who is in her second season with the Wildcats as an assistant coach.  

What is Next?

The Blue Devils will hit the road for the final two-game weekend slate of the season as Duke travels to Syracuse (Friday, March 24) and Boston College (Sunday, March 26).  Friday’s match against the Orange is scheduled for a 3 p.m., start on ACC Network Extra.  On Sunday, the Blue Devils and Eagles will play at 2 p.m.

The Duke Record Book

Senior Chloe Beck is moving into the top-10 in numerous categories in the Duke record book.  In the career record book, she ranks 10th in ACC singles wins (30), second in consecutive ACC singles wins (21), tied for ninth in doubles wins (98) and 10th in singles wins at No. 1 position (20).

Duke’s doubles duo of Beck and Cameron Morra already rank tied for 11th on Duke’s most doubles wins in a season with 24.  With their next win, the tandem will move into a tie for 10th along with Kelly McCain and Hilary Adams (25).
