DURHAM – Echoing the date of Duke University’s founding in 1924, Duke kicked off its Centennial celebration January 9, 2024, with a day of events highlighting the people, groups and achievements at Duke over the past 100 years.
“Our Centennial is a gift to us: our chance to pause and contemplate our past, to appreciate the present, and to plan for our future,” said Duke President Vincent E. Price.
In 2024, Duke celebrates its Centennial, marking one hundred years since Trinity College became Duke University. Duke will use this historic milestone to deepen the understanding of its history, inspire pride and strengthen bonds and partnerships, and prepare for a second century of continued excellence and impactful leadership. A leader in collegiate athletics, Duke has won 17 NCAA team titles and 23 NCAA individual titles. Excellence in the athletics arena and the classroom are synonymous at Duke as the Blue Devils have led the ACC in ACC Honor Roll selections in 35 of the past 36 years.
Duke Athletics will join the Centennial celebration throughout the next 12 months dedicating one home event for each of the Blue Devils’ 27 varsity sports to commemorate the 100 years of Duke University.
Duke student-athletes will receive t-shirts and bag tags with the Centennial logo and rally towels will be given away to early arriving fans at each designated home event. Additionally, a video highlighting a few of the best moments over the past 100 years will be played for those in attendance to enjoy.
The Blue Devils kick off their portion of the Centennial Jan. 26 with swimming and diving against North Carolina at 4 p.m., and wrestling versus Virginia at 7 p.m.
The full schedule of spring events is below. The Centennial celebration will continue into the fall with dates being announced as final schedules become available. The men and women’s basketball programs also will recognize the 100 years of Duke in the early months of their 2024-25 seasons.
