EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 39 Northwestern is in Iowa this Friday for the Big Ten Women’s Tennis tournament quarterfinal. The match is slated for 12 p.m. CT.
After finishing third in the Big Ten, the Wildcats receive a double-bye in the tournament. Rutgers and Purdue play on Wednesday, and the winner of that match will go on to play No. 53 Nebraska on Thursday. Northwestern will play against the winner of Thursday’s match. It is the second consecutive season the ‘Cats finished third in the conference.
Northwestern has already played both Rutgers and Nebraska, defeating the Scarlet Knights 7-0 and Cornhuskers 4-1.
The ‘Cats are 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten after falling to No. 23 Michigan (4-1) on Sunday afternoon on the road. Ema Lazic earned Northwestern’s point, winning her singles match, 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 4 court. Lazic’s performance has been notably consistent this season, winning all but one of her singles matchups.
Doubles duos Clarissa Hand and Maria Shusharina, as well as Justine Leong and Christina Hand are performing at high levels this season. Hand and Shusharina has lost only one match while playing together, while Leong and Hand have yet to drop a doubles match this season.
