Playing Defense – The Wildcats made history last spring after sweeping the Pac-12 to claim the 2022 regular season champion title for the first time in program history. They defied the odds to come out on top. Arizona trails behind in all of their series with Pac-12 California schools, but the ‘Cats have been climbing back to close that lead. With another courageously talented team, Arizona Men’s Tennis aims to defend their 2022 regular season title and persist even further in postseason play. These next two matches are sure to have a stacked lineup on both sides.
In the Ranks – Arizona moved up two spots in the latest ITA polls from #17 to #15, marking the 10th week in a row the team lands in the top 20. They have remained a top 25 team for the past four years and are on track to do it again. Four Wildcats stay steady in the singles rankings – #28 Jonas Ziverts, #78 Colton Smith, #96 Herman Hoeyeraal and #115 Nick Lagaev – and two duos picked up a spot in the doubles rankings, #58 Ziverts and Jay Friend, and #59 Ziverts and Hoeyeraal. Stanford also has four ranked individuals, and one doubles pair: #3 Nishesh Basavareddy, #8 Max Basing, #13 Arthur Fery, #114 Samir Banerjee and #23 Basavareddy/Fery. The Golden Bears are represented by #30 Yuta Kikuchi and #94 Ryder Jackson in singles, and by #54 Jackson/Lucas Magnaudet and #67 Kikuchi/Carl Emil Overbeck.
What’s Next – After the initial two conference matches, the Wildcats are back at home to host their last non-conference contests in a doubleheader against NM State on Saturday, March 25 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. MT. Then Arizona gets to host four Pac-12 matches over two weeks: UCLA on March 31, USC on April 2, Oregon on April 7 and Washington on April 9.
