STILLWATER, Okla. – Sofia Cabezas of the Tennessee women’s tennis team dropped her first contest in the NCAA Singles Championships on Monday afternoon. The senior fell to a 1-6, 4-6 defeat against No. 67 Annabelle Xu from Virginia at Greenwood Tennis Center.
Cabezas, the No. 14-ranked player in the country, could not overcome a strong singles showing from Xu. Just two days removed from playing in the NCAA Team Championship Final Four, the Valencia, Venezuela, native got off to a slow start in the opening set and dropped a 1-6 result.
The senior gained momentum in the second set, notching four straight wins to claim a 4-1 lead. However, playing for the fourth time in five days, Cabezas could not maintain control, as Xu worked her way back to notch a 6-4 decision, sealing the match.
Cabezas caps off the year earning ITA All-America status with 12 stellar singles wins, including three phenomenal victories over top-10 opponents.
Cabezas is back in action tomorrow when she will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships with partner, Elza Tomase. The duo is set to take on No. 8 Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard of Virginia.
