CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Head coach Brian Kalbas, who led the University of North Carolina women’s tennis program to its first NCAA championship and seventh ITA indoor national championship in 2023, has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension through the 2027 season.
“Over the course of 20 years, Coach Brian Kalbas has built and fostered a culture of integrity and success on and off the court,” said UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. “It was truly special to watch him lead his team to the NCAA title, and we look forward to seeing him continue to produce standout players and exceptional people as a Carolina coach.”
Under Kalbas’ leadership, North Carolina posted an historic season in 2023 which culminated in its first NCAA team national title. He also led the Tar Heels to their seventh ITA indoor national championship, won a program-record 35 matches, compiled a perfect 18-0 record at home and saw an All-UNC NCAA doubles championship final. Following the season, four Tar Heels were named ITA All-Americas, two Tar Heels garnered ITA National Awards and Kalbas himself was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the year.
Kalbas holds the program record with 532 career victories, carries an .800 career winning percentage at UNC and is one of four Division one women’s coaches to achieve 700 wins. He is the active leader in career dual match victories with 746.
He also is a six-time ACC Coach of the Year award winner and the winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history.
“To be the head women’s tennis coach at North Carolina has been a dream come true for me,” Kalbas said. “I want to thank Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, Bubba Cunningham, the Board of Trustees and everyone within UNC Athletics for allowing me to do what I thoroughly love, and that is coaching here at the University of North Carolina.
“I am excited to continue coaching in the Chewning Tennis Center, the best facility in the country, alongside Tyler Thomson, our associate head coach. Our program would not be at the level it is at now without the support of our fans, administration and Coach Thomson’s commitment.”
Kalbas has produced more than 55 All-ACC honorees, more than 45 ITA All-Americas, seven ACC Players of the Year, three Arthur Ashe Award Winners, two Honda Award winners and two ITA Players of the Year. This past…
