Brateanu, van Beurden, Espin Busleiman earn ITA Mountain Region Honors


SALT LAKE CITY – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional awards and Utah’s Roeland Brateanu, Sten van Beurden and Geronimo Espin Busleiman all walked away with honors.  

Brateanu was named the Mountain Region Coach of the Year, van Beurden earned Regional Assistant Coach of the Year and Espin Busleiman was named the Senior Player of the Year. 

Every year the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the court and in their communities throughout the season.

The Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year honors a coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on and off-court team performance.This is Brateanu’s fifth regional coach of the year honor. This ties the record for most coach of the year honors in Mountain Region history. He joins the ranks of Hall of Fame coach Greg Patton from Boise State. 

The ITA Assistant Coach of the Year honors an assistant coach who has exhibited outstanding leadership in ways that contribute to on and off-court team performance. This is van Beurden’s second consecutive year earning the honor.

 


Brateanu and van Beurden led the Utes to its first Pac-12 Regular Season Title and an NCAA Tournament Appearance. Utah posted a 24-6 overall record and went 6-2 in Pac-12 action. Utah made a deep run in the Pac-12 Tournament going all the way to the finals for the first time in school history. 

Utah earned an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and picked up a 4-1 win over Old Dominion in the first round. Brateanu was also named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. 

Espin Busleiman has been nationally ranked in the top 50 for most of the 2023 season, capping with a #38 ranking. He posted a 19-5 record in singles action during the spring season with 13 wins coming at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. He recorded an 11 match winning streak from Feb. 19 to April 17. He posted a 7-1 singles record in Pac-12 action. He and Partner Franco Capalbo posted a 16-8 doubles record with 15 wins coming at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. 

Espin Busleiman earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors and made an appearance in the NCAA Singles Tournament.
