Blue Gray Tennis Classic Up Next for Illini


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 32 Fighting Illini Women’s Tennis (6-3) is set to compete in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. The tournament includes Alabama, No. 31 Arizona, Furman, No. 47 Texas Tech, Tulsa, Wake Forest, and No. 58 Yale. Illinois will play three total matches at the event.

Illinois’ opening contest is against Alabama on Friday at 9 a.m. Then based on results the Illini will finish Friday with doubles against their second opponent – either Tulsa or Wake Forest. On Saturday, Illinois will finish its second match, playing singles against Tulsa or Wake Forest. Then to finish out the tournament, Illinois will play its third contest Saturday afternoon.  

Last Time Out

Last weekend the Illini put up another strong effort going 2-0. After having its matchup with Xavier canceled, Illinois rebounded quickly and grabbed a 4-2 win over Marshall. The following day Illinois secured its first Big Ten win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Penn State.

Illini vs. The Field

Alabama leads the all-time series but Illinois claimed the most recent matchup with a 4-1 victory on Feb 22, 2019.

Illinois all-time records against other potential opponents at the Blue Gray Classic include: 0-5 against Arizona, 3-0 against Furman, 0-4 against Texas Tech, 2-1 vs. Wake Forest, and 3-0 against Yale. Illinois and Tulsa have never met.

Illini Notes

Head coach Evan Clark is in his eighth year as the head coach of Illinois women’s tennis and holds an overall dual record of 103-70 (.595) and is 51-25 (.671) in Big Ten play during his time as an Illini.

The Illini are coming off a 16-9 season with an 8-3 Big Ten record in 2021-22.

Illinois returns seven of its eight players from last season, including seniors Emily Casati, Josie Frazier, and Ashley Yeah; junior Kate Duong; and sophomores Kida Ferrari, Megan Heuser, and Kasia Treiber. The Illini also welcomed new freshman Violeta Martinez to the squad.
