DURHAM – Duke men’s tennis fell in the semifinals of both the singles and doubles event at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Monday at the Cary Tennis Park.
No. 17-32 Dusan Milanovic of Presbyterian claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over senior No. 7 Andrew Zhang in the singles semifinals.
A few hours later, Zhang was back on the court with teammate Michael Heller, competing in the doubles quarterfinals. The duo bested fourth-seeded Benjamin Kittay and Logan Zapp of North Carolina in a three-set comeback thriller 5-7, 6-4, 13-11.
Unfortunately, the pair would not be able to overcome another exciting three-set match in the semifinals. Zhang and Heller registered a 7-6 (8) tiebreak win in the opening set against No. 9-16 Rafael Izquierdo Luque and Joseph Wayand N.C. State but dropped a 7-6 (1) decision in the second. With the match coming down to the outcome of the third set, the Wolfpack pulled in front for the 10-3 win to advance to Tuesday’s finals.
Zhang recorded an impressive five singles wins and four doubles wins throughout the tournament to lead the Blue Devils.
