Blue Devils Split Final Day of Tom Chewning Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Alexander Visser and graduate student Michael Heller split a pair of matches in the final round of singles play to conclude action in the Tom Chewning Invitational Sunday.

Visser opened the morning with a convincing 6-3, 7-5 win over Thomas Kennedy of Furman in his final match. The Westport, Conn., native finished 2-1 on the weekend, marking the first two wins of his Blue Devil career.

Heller, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., battled Wake Forest’s Harry Thursfield but dropped in a 6-2, 6-3 decision to round out the competition in singles play. The graduate student closed out the weekend with a 1-2 ledger in singles and captured a doubles title after going 3-0 with senior Faris Khan.

The action continues for a pair of Blue Devils as redshirt-senior Garrett Johns and sophomore Pedro Rodenas compete in the ATP Charleston Challenger in Charleston, S.C. this week.

Rodenas, representing Spain, defeated Nathan Ponwith of USA after a three-set battle in the first qualifying round. After dropping the first set, 7-6 (5), Rodenas rebounded with back-to-back victories at 6-1, 7-6 (5) to claim the win. The sophomore advances to the final qualifying round to face Mexico’s Ernesto Escobedo on Monday at 10 a.m.

Johns will represent the United States in the main draw and opens action Monday against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France in the round of 32.
