Duke Earns Two of Three ACC Weekly Tennis Awards

DURHAM – The ACC announced Tuesday that Duke men’s tennis earned two of the league’s three weekly awards after securing both the player and doubles team of the week.

The Blue Devil tandem of redshirt senior Garrett Johns and sophomore Pedro Rodenas collected ACC Doubles Team of the Week nods, while Johns added solo praise for the second time this season as the conferences’ player of the week.

Johns and Rodenas earned a pair of ranked wins this past weekend, clinching the doubles point in Friday’s win against Virginia Tech’s No. 80 Ryan Fishback and Maxime St. Helaire. The duo then upset Virginia’s No. 19 Iñaki Montes and James Hopper to conclude the weekend on Sunday. The twosome registered their team leading ninth and 10th victories this season and are now 7-3 on Duke’s main court.

In singles play, Johns went 2-0 with two ranked wins. At the No. 1 singles spot, he defeated Virginia Tech’s No. 60 Fishback in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, before taking down No. 38 Iñaki Montes of No. 3 Virginia in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 on Sunday. The Atlanta, Ga., native improved to 11-3 in dual action, including a 9-2 mark on court one. He is now 6-2 against ranked opponents.

The Blue Devils hit the road this weekend for two matches against No. 59 Miami and No. 13 Florida State on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Duke will face the Hurricanes on Friday at 3 p.m., before traveling to meet up with the Seminoles on Sunday at noon.
