Fan favorite Gael Monfils has stepped out of the US Open due to a recurring foot injury.
The 2016 US Open semifinalist announced his withdrawal from the season’s final Grand Slam today.
“Following the latest medical exams that I took upon returning in Europe, I will sadly not be able to play at the US Open this year,” Monfils said. “I am forced to undergo a new period of treatment before being able to resume tournaments.”

It will mark the fourth time since his 2005 Flushing Meadows debut that Monfils will miss the US Open.
Monfils underwent surgery to his right foot earlier this season. The 35-year-old Frenchman returned to action last week in Montreal where he defeated Pedro Martinez and Maxime Cressy. Facing Jack Draper, Monfils suffered pain in his right heel prompting his retirement in the second set.
Montreal was Monfils’ first tournament since the Mutua Madrid Open last May.
The former world No. 6 captured his 11th career title in Adelaide last January.
