TULSA, Okla., – Monday was certainly a good day for Mississippi State men’s tennis.
Matt Roberts‘ Bulldogs reeled off four victories – including a ranked doubles win – during the third day of play at the ITA All-American Championships hosted by Tulsa.
Benito Sanchez Martinez began the morning on a strong note, rallying back to beat Michigan’s Nino Ehrenschneider 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. No. 68 Petar Jovanovic followed suit with a straight-set 7-6(3), 6-3 triumph over Togan Tokac of Texas A&M.
Sanchez Martinez and Jovanovic will both move on to Tuesday’s second round of qualifying at 9 a.m. Sanchez Martinez will match up against senior Guillaume Dalmasso of Santa Clara while Jovanovic faces off with Duke graduate Michael Heller.
The sophomore tandem of Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez also teamed up for a pair of doubles victories on Monday. The duo defeated Memphis’ Pablo Alemany and Mika Berghaus 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round and then outlasted No. 59 Murphy Cassone and Martin Vergara Del Puerto of Arizona State 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 1-0[7] to close out the evening.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez will take on Oliver Tarvet and Iiro Vasa of San Diego in the Round of 16 on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Mississippi State’s lone loss on Monday came at the hands of the 53rd-ranked doubles team of Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal. The Columbia duo defeated Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes and Dusan Milanovic 6-3, 6-2 during the first round of the main draw.
