Lopez Named ITA Mountain Region Rookie of the Year


SALT LAKE CITY – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional awards and Utah’s Marcela Lopez was named the Mountain Region Rookie of the Year. 

Every year the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the court and in their communities throughout the season.

The ITA Rookie of the Year honors a first-year student-athlete who made significant contributions to his/her team in the areas of leadership, sportsmanship and performance.

During the spring season, Lopez posted a 15-5 singles record with 12 wins coming at the No. 5 spot in the lineup and three wins at the No. 4 spot. She posted a 5-4 record in the Pac-12. To start the 2023 spring season Lopez went on an 11-match win streak.

In doubles action, Lopez posted a 14-7 in doubles play. She posted a 12-5 record with her partner, Kaila Barksdale, all at the No. 3 spot. 

The Utes posted a 13-11 overall record this season and went 4-6 in Pac-12 action.
