Men’s Tennis Earns 4-1 Win Over No. 61 Drake on Final Day of Diablos Tennis Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. – Michigan State men’s tennis earned a 4-1 win over No. 61 Drake on the final day of the Arizona State Diablos Tennis Tournament on Sunday, finishing the tournament in seventh place at Arizona State’s Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe. 

MSU moved to 6-7 (0-0 B1G) with the win, while Drake dropped to 8-8 (0-0 Summit League). Sunday marked the Spartans second win over the Bulldogs this season, first earning a 4-3 victory in East Lansing on Feb. 18. 

The Spartans picked up the doubles point with wins in the top two spots. The 20th-ranked Spartan doubles pairing of freshman Ozan Baris and sophomore Max Sheldon picked up their third win against a ranked doubles team this season, defeating 61st-ranked Oliver Johansson and Matija Matic, 6-1 on court one. At No. 2 doubles, junior Luke Baylis and sophomore Josh Portnoy topped Drake’s Matt Clegg and Reid Jarvis, 6-4, to secure MSU’s first point of the match. 

Baris, ranked No. 29 in the most recent ITA Singles rankings, continued his winning ways with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 92 Jeremy Schifris at No. 1 singles. Sheldon earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Matic on court two.  

Drake rallied on court four to pick up a point for a 3-1 match, with Johansson topping fifth-year senior Anthony Pero, 7-5, 6-0.  

Baylis, after winning his first set 6-4, dropped his second set 3-6 on court three before earning a 7-5 comeback win in the third set. Baylis clinched the match for the Spartans for the second time this season, last clinching MSU’s 4-3 win over Western Michigan on March 3.
