NEW YORK – The seventh-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team fell to No. 6 Virginia, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships on Saturday inside Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
UT (8-3) took the doubles point for the 10th time this season thanks to 28th-ranked Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka’s cruising 6-1 performance over James Hopper and Edoardo Graziani of UVA (8-3). The pair won 74 percent of their first serve points and now boasts a 10-1 dual match record. The Cavaliers responded with a 6-1 win on court three to tie up the doubles score. The clinch came from ninth-ranked Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz in a thrilling effort, exchanging points until the duo came out on top in a 7-5 tiebreak battle at 6-all over the Wahoos’ Chris Rodesch and Jeffrey Von Der Schulenburg.
Tennessee and Virginia split the first sets of singles action, but the Cavaliers took a 2-1 advantage with straight-set wins on courts two and three. From there, the four remaining singles courts battled it out in third sets. UVA went up 3-1 with a win on court six, followed by its clinching point with a victory on court one. Moments after, the Cavaliers gained their fifth point with a win on court four, where Apltauer held his own against 56th-ranked Von Der Schulenburg, winning the first set, 7-6(4), but ultimately fell in his last two sets, 3-6, 5-7.
Chris Li narrowly dropped a first-set tiebreaker, 3-7, at 6-all to Graziani on court five, but kicked it into gear to serve a bagel in his second set. The junior was up 6-5 in his third set before going unfinished.
