#51 Arizona Defeats #48 Utah 4-3 at Home


TUCSON, Ariz. – #51 Arizona Women’s Tennis proved to be victorious over #48 Utah on Friday, April 14 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center with a tight score of 4-3.

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Wildcats battled back in singles play, winning four intense matches. In doubles competition, the ‘Cats came up short against the Utes. Arizona tandem Salma Ziouti and Reece Carter finished first on court two, falling 4-6 to Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend. Utah clinched the point after Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova bested Kayla Wilkins and Parker Fry 6-4 at one doubles. 

Arizona’s Ziouti put the Wildcats on the board with a swift straight set win over Utah’s Tattini at one singles. Shortly after, freshman Carter won her match also in straight sets. The Canadian defeated Townsend 6-2, 6-4 on court two to put Arizona in the lead. Next off the courts was Tucson native Tanvi Narendran who bested Horwood in another straight set match for the ‘Cats. The freshman Wildcat gave up one game in the first set before winning it 6-1, then finishing off the Ute 6-4 in the second. 

Clinching the match for the ‘Cats was sophomore Midori Castillo in three fierce sets, the last two ending in breakers. The Wildcat fell to Goncharova 3-6 in the first set then came back to win 7-6(2) in the second and 7-6(4) in the third. 

This marks Arizona’s second conference win and their tenth win at home. The ‘Cats stand at 15-11 overall and are gearing up to host #54 Colorado tomorrow, Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m. MT.
