TEMPE – Murphy Cassone is heading back to the NCAA Singles Tournament! The sophomore Sun Devil, who ranks No. 37 in the country, will open the tournament against North Carolina’s No. 40 Brian Cernoch. Play begins May 22 at 10 a.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Cassone is 17-6 (8-2 Pac-12) in singles play and has a 3.2 ITF World Tennis Number, while Cernoch is 11-12 (3-7 ACC) and has a 3.7 ITF WTN. Last season Cassone made the tournament after dominating the west coach, but took an opening-round loss to Ohio State’s Matej Vocel.

The 2022 ITA Rookie of the Year was absolutely dominant in the final weeks of the regular season. Cassone was a perfect 6-0 in April and never lost more than two matches back-to-back during the year. Of his 17 wins, just five went to a third set.
