Women’s Tennis Drops 4-1 Decision to Maryland in Final Regular Season Matchup

University Park, Pa.—Penn State women’s tennis (11-12, 5-6 B1G) fell to Maryland (17-6, 6-5 B1G) in a 4-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at the Sarni Tennis Center. 

“It was a tough one today, lots of emotions but super proud of everyone for giving it their all!” said senior, Olivia Ryan. “So much love for everyone on this team and excited to see what we can achieve at the Big Ten Tournament.” 


Doubles 

Maryland found an early lead in the match earning wins on courts one and two. 

Court No. 3 saw victory for Penn State as duo Gabby O’Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen earned a win over Maryland’s Jojo Bac and Fransecsa Feodorov, 6-2. 

Duo Olivia Ryan and Sofiya Chekhlystova fought a hard battle against Selma Cadar and Mary Brumfield, but untimely fell 7-6 (7-5) on court two.   


Singles 

Maryland extended its lead with wins on courts two, four and six in singles play, ultimately clinching the match with a 4-1 result.  

O’Gorman defeated Minorka Miranda on court No. 3  in straight 6-4 sets to earn the Nittany Lions a singles point. 

Court No. 1’s hard-fought battle between Chekhlystova and Selma Cadar was left 6-4, 3-6, 2-2 (unfinished). Court No. 5 held the same fate for Nielsen. Nielsen defeated Jojo Bach in the first set, but left the match at a split after dropping the second set 5-7, as the third set was not played out.
