Trio of Vols Set to Compete in NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships


STILLWATER, Okla. – After advancing to the NCAA Championships quarterfinals as a team for the third time in five seasons, three members of Tennessee men’s tennis are set to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, running May 20-25 at Greenwood Tennis Center.
 
The field consists of 64 singles players and 32 doubles pairs, with the singles tournament slated to begin Monday and doubles competition starting Tuesday.
 
Senior Johannus Monday and junior Shunsuke Mitsui will represent UT in singles play, while Monday and graduate Angel Diaz will take the court in doubles action.

PREVIEWING SINGLES
Two-time SEC Player of the Year Monday earned the top seed in the singles draw, boasting a stellar 28-3 record in 2023-24. The senior tallied a 24-3 record at UT’s top singles position and notched a 19-2 record vs. ranked opponents this year. 
 
Mitsui, named All-SEC First Team, earned an at-large bid into the singles tournament. The junior registered a 23-6 mark in dual match play, including a 24-3 record at the No. 2 singles spot and went 9-3 against ranked opponents this season.
 
PREVIEWING DOUBLES
Monday and Diaz posted a 17-6 record as Tennessee’s top doubles pair in 2024, notching an impressive 11-3 mark against ranked opponents. The duo was named to the 2024 ITA National Indoors All-Tournament Team after going 3-0 in the event and notching a top-five win against Harvard.

4 p.m. ET – Shunsuke Mitsui vs. Edward Winter (Pepperdine)
 
Tuesday, May 21 – Doubles Round of 32
TBD – (5-8) Johannus Monday/Angel Diaz vs. Jacob Bullard/Murphy Cassone (Arizona State)
 
MATCH FORMAT
All singles and doubles matches will be best two-out-of-three sets. In doubles play, a 10-point super tiebreak will be used in lieu of a third set.
 
UT’S HISTORY AT THE NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2024 campaign marks the sixth straight year in which Tennessee has been represented in both the singles and doubles postseason draws. Additionally, the Vols have had at least one singles player and at least one doubles pair make the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in 15 of the past 17 seasons.
