Wolf Enjoying Run at US Open – Ohio State Buckeyes

For the second time in three years, former Ohio State All-American JJ Wolf finds himself in the third round of the US Open in Flushing, N.Y. He is set to take on world No. 25 Nick Kyrgios on Friday evening inside Louis Armstrong Stadium. The pair will be the second match of the evening session which begins at 7 p.m.

Wolf opened his tournament on Monday against No. 16 seed and world No. 18 Roberto Bautista Agut. The Cincinnati, Ohio dominated with his serve. He had 14 aces and won 88 percent of the points on his first serve. He used that to push through for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 straight-set victory. That was Wolf’s first win over a Top 20 ranked opponent.

On Wednesday, he took on Alejandro Tabilo in the second round. Wolf’s serve let him down a bit in the first set, falling 6-4. But he regained his confidence and would dominate the next three sets, winning 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 and racking up 20 more service aces.

Wolf began the week ranked 87th in the world. So far in 2022, he’s reached the semifinals of four Challenger events and has also advanced in the main draw at five ATP 500 level or higher events. That included his first-ever ATP quarterfinal appearance at the Citi Open in Washington in mid-August. There, he beat world No. 22 Denis Shapovalov in three sets.

Wolf was a three-time first team All-Big Ten honoree at Ohio State from 2017-19. He and earned All-America honors in 2019 after going a dominant 35-2 in singles action. He was also the Big Ten Player of the Year with a perfect 11-0 record. For his career, Wolf had 76 singles wins and held a combined 122-38 record in three seasons as a Buckeye.
