TEMPE, Ariz.- Sun Devil Women’s Tennis and Men’s Tennis have come together to set the standard for outreach and engagement with the tennis community in Arizona.
From starting the ball kids program to now partnering with the Women’s Interclub Tennis League Valley of The Sun, head coaches Sheila McInerney and Matt Hill are intentional about growing the game and making it accessible for all.
WITL (Women’s Interclub Tennis League) is a non-profit organization in Arizona that has focused on bringing women’s tennis across the state together for tennis competition for nearly 40 years.
The Sun Devil tennis programs will host six clinics over the next eight weeks for WITL, with the first two clinics happening on February 21 and February 22. The next clinic will be on March 27 at 10:00 a.m. MST at Whiteman Tennis Center followed by clinics on March 30, April 10 and April 11 at the same times.
The clinics are free as they strive to make the game of tennis more enjoyable as there is a focus on drills and strategies that will help the players improve their play regardless of their skill set. Hill, along with his assistant coaches Dom Cotrone and David Fox, are a part of the group that helps run these in clinics. In addition to the men’s tennis coaching staff, women’s tennis assistant coach Blake Olmscheid and men’s tennis players Roi Ginat, Max McKennon and Daniel Phillips also have volunteered their time to help.
“One of our goals as a university is to have a positive impact on the communities and peoples we serve,” senior associate athletic director Natesh Rao said. “This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to understand the importance of giving back to the community. Not only are they giving back, but they are having a great time meeting new people and helping them get a little bit better. We are very appreciative of our partnership with the WITL and hope to do more events in the future.”
The programming at these clinics consists of introductions by the coaches and student-athletes followed by breaking into small groups on each court to go over strategies, tactics and some skills instructions.
