Tech falls to No. 33 Wake Forest

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech’s two-match ACC winning streak came to an end on Thursday, as the No. 59 Hokies fell to No. 33 Wake Forest, 4-3.

Led by its No. 79-ranked doubles pair, Wake Forest picked up wins on Courts Nos. 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point. Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu were a game away from getting on the board, as they led 5-4 when the point was clinched.

In singles, Wake Forest battled for a trio of straight set wins on Court Nos. 1, 2 and 5 to wrap clinch the victory.

Semra Aksu came out the gate strong on Court No. 3 to take the first set. While her opponent looked like they could force a 10-point tiebreak, a retirement gave Aksu the victory and Tech its first point of the day.

There was no stopping freshman Laima Frosch on Court 6, as she shutout her opponent in the first set. A strong rally in the second forced the match to a tiebreaker third, but Frosch put her foot back on the gas to clinch a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (4) win.

Tamara Barad Itzahi helped the Hokies end the day on a high note. After battling out for a 6-4 first set, she dropped her second, but closed out strong for a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (7) win.

Virginia Tech returns to the courts on Saturday to face No. 10 NC State at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
