SEATTLE — Three times now this season the Husky men’s tennis team has won back-to-back matches. UW looks to make it three-straight for the first time on Friday when it hosts Santa Clara at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. From there, UW will get set to take on Michigan, the third-ranked team in the country, on Sunday in the NTC.
First serve on Friday against the Broncos will be 3 p.m. while the clash with the 3rd-ranked Wolverines will start at 11 a.m.
Washington earned its first ranking of the season this week as the ITA poll expanded to the top-75 for the first time, with the 6-3 Huskies coming in at No. 48 overall. Sophomore Dzianis Zharyn moved into the singles rankings for the first time at No. 120.
The Dawgs will get to see an old friend on Friday as former Husky Jack Pulliam is a grad student competing now for Santa Clara. The Bulldogs are 6-3 on the season and last week defeated Grand Canyon and UC Davis. Losses have come against Stanford, Oregon, and San Diego. Arthur Neuhaus, an All-WCC Team pick, has played NO. 1 singles in eight of nine matches and gone 5-3. Christian Lerby is 5-0 in dual matches.
Michigan is coming to town fresh off a trip to the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, where the Wolverines defeated No. 17 Stanford and No. 5 Virginia before dropping a 4-3 match to No. 7 Texas in the semis. Michigan also has several more Top-25 wins over No. 6 Tennessee, No. 24 Northwestern, No. 11 Baylor, No. 18 Harvard, and No. 6 USC. Last year Michigan advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Remarkably, Michigan has four different singles players all ranked between No. 10 and No. 18 in the nation. Andrew Fenty is No. 10, Patrick Maloney is No. 11, Ondrej Styler is No. 16, and Gavin Young is No. 18. In doubles, Fenty and Young are ranked No. 7 nationally.
