Berta Passola Folch lost just one game in her qualifying singles opener at ITA All-Americans.
CARY, N.C. – California women’s tennis sophomore Berta Passola Folch won her opening round of 64 match in qualifying singles at the ITA All-American Championships on Monday to advance to the second round. The 106th-ranked Golden Bear defeated Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo of Texas 6-1, 6-0 at Cary Tennis Park.
Passola Folch next faces Georgia’s 75th-ranked Guillermina Grant on Tuesday at a time to be announced.
Also in Monday’s first round, Cal 80th-ranked senior Lan Mi fell to North Carolina State’s Gabia Paskauskas 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, while Golden Bear sophomore Mao Mushika, ranked 107th, lost to Oklahoma’s 100th-ranked Emma Staker 6-1, 6-4. Both Bears move onto the consolation draw, with Mi playing Appalachian State’s Savannah Dada-Mascoll and Mushika taking on UCLA’s 97th-ranked Elise Wagle on Tuesday at times to be announced.
Katja Wiersholm was slated to partner with Passola Folch in qualifying doubles Monday and to play in main draw singles Wednesday in Cary, but the Cal senior had to withdraw from ITA All-Americans due to injury.
