No. 47 Planinsek Wins Open Round at ITA All-American Championships


TULSA, Okla. –– Alabama men’s tennis standout and 47th-ranked ITA singles player Filip Planinsek advanced to the Round of 64 after winning his opening match against Harvard’s Cooper Williams.

Planinsek won the match in three sets against the fourth-ranked ITF World Junior player. He returns to action Tuesday to face Michigan’s Jacob Bickersteth in the Round of 64.

The Competition

  • After reaching a 6-6 tie in the opening set, Planinsek fought his way to a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker
  • Williams emerged victories in the second round, securing a narrow 7-5 win
  • However, the UA junior would gain momentum heading into the final set, dropping just two game to earn the victory and advance in the tournament
  • Planinsek and Bickersteth will meet for the second time this season after going head-to-head in the SEC/Big Ten Challenge (Sept. 16)
  • Planinsek won that meeting with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory

Next

  • Planinsek will compete in the Round of 64 on Tuesday
  • Match time will be announced later in the day
