DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team could not overcome the dominant No. 13 Duke Blue Devils, falling 6-1 Friday evening at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Graduate student No. 52 Dan Martin tallied his fifth ranked win of the season, defeating No. 14 Garrett Johns, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), for Miami’s only point of the day.
The Blue Devils took care of business in doubles action, recording a pair of victories on courts one and three. The No. 54 duo of fifth-year senior Juan Martin Jalif and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto fell, 4-6, to No. 27 Johns and Pedro Rodenas, while sophomore Martin Katz and freshman Antonio Prat faced the same result on court three.
Duke rattled off the next five points, with singles victories on courts two through five. Four of the five matches were decided in straight sets, but Katz battled Duke’s Andrew Zhang to a third set. The sophomore ultimately fell, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, at third singles.
With a sweep eminent, Martin staved off Johns at first singles for the ranked victory and Miami’s only point of the match.
The Hurricanes remain in the Tar Heel state to take on No. 16 North Carolina on Sunday. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
