TEMPE, Ariz.- No. 25 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis will open the spring 2024 season with a pair of home matches at the Whiteman Tennis Center as they will take on UC Davis (10 a.m.) and UC San Diego (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
The pair of matches this weekend mark the beginning of the 40th season for head coach Sheila McInerney.
Arizona State returns a majority of its roster from last season with six returners. Freshmen Ada Pietrzynska, Sara Svetac and Emilija Tverijonaite will make their regular season debuts this weekend.
UC DAVIS (Jan. 13/10 a.m.)
- The Aggies are led by Bill Maze, who is in his 29th season with the program. UC Davis finished the 2022-23 campaign with an 8-14 record and had a three match midseason winning streak with wins over conference opponent Hawaii as well as Montana and Montana State. The Aggies have also been named an ITA All-Academic team the past two seasons.
- Returning for the Aggies this season is junior Arianna Stavropoulos who was named to the All-Big West Second Team in singles as she had a 14-6 record last season. Her All-Big West First Team nod in doubles is the second in program history for a doubles pairing, and the first time since 2014.
UC SAN DIEGO (Jan. 13/3 p.m.)
- Sebastian Bader is the first-year head coach of the Tritons in August 2023 after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach under Liz LaPlante, who retired after 44 seasons as the head coach fro UCSD.
- The Tritons enter their fourth season as a Division I program as they finished the 2022-23 season with a 10-16 record and an appearance in the inaugural postseason NIT Championship.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Sun Devils will remain at home next weekend with their standalone match on Saturday, January 20, against Fresno State (11 a.m.). It’ll complete three of 13 home matches played at Whiteman this spring.
