MALIBU, Calif – The No. 19 ranked USC Women’s Tennis team recorded a 4-0 victory over San Diego State during the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 7) at Pepperdine University.
With the win, USC improves to 18-11 on the season and secures a spot in the second round of NCAA Tournament. The Women of Troy will face No. 8 Pepperdine tomorrow at 1 p.m. during the round of 32. The Trojans will look to avenge a loss suffered against the Waves in early March, when USC fell 5-2 in Malibu.
The Trojans came out swinging on Friday morning, claiming two victories in doubles play to haul in the point and take an early lead. On court one, the No. 72 ranked doubles team of Eryn Cayetano and Salma Ewing defeated SDSU’s Nadozie/Melosch 6-2, moments before Snow Han and Danielle Willson downed Morin/Pitts 6-4 to claim the doubles point. Trojans Cheong/Piper and Aztecs Arnold/Jordan were tied 5-5 before the match went unfinished.
Moving into singles play, freshman Grace Piper earned USC a second point on court five, defeating SDSU’s Jordan 6-2,6-0. Shortly thereafter, #104 Snow Han beat Aztec Regina Pitts in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to extend the Trojans lead. Moment later, Senior Danielle Willson beat Morin of SDSU on court six to clinch the match for the Trojans with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
With the match clinched, play was suspended on courts 1, 2 and four with the Trojans leading on all three remaining courts.
