No. 19 Men’s Tennis Continues B1G Competition Against No. 18 Michigan State, Michigan


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 19 Fighting Illini men’s tennis is set to host No. 18 Michigan State and Michigan this weekend at Atkins Tennis Center.

The Illini will take on the Spartans on March 30 at 12 p.m. CT and the Wolverines on March 31 at 12 p.m. CT, while both will be played on the outdoor courts at Atkins Tennis Center.  

History

Illinois has the upper hand over Michigan State with a 64-28 overall head-to-head record. 

Michigan State is also Illinois head coach Brad Dancer‘s alma mater, where he spent 1989-93 playing for the Spartans. During his time as a Spartan, the Illini went 4-3 against Michigan State. 

Michigan holds a 45-66-3 record over Illinois and is the only team that has three ties with the Illini. 

Scouting Report

Michigan State is coming off back-to-back Big Ten wins over Nebraska (5-2) and Wisconsin (7-0). 

The Spartans have three singles players in the top 125: Ozan Baris (No. 11), Ronnie Hohmann (No. 34) and Graydon Lair (No. 115). They also have three ranked doubles pairs: Max Sheldon/Baris (No. 3), Baris/Hohmann (No. 66) and Hohmann/Sebastien Collard (No. 68). 

Michigan is on a two-match winning streak over Wisconsin (7-0) and Nebraska (5-2), similar to Michigan State. 

The Wolverines have two singles players ranked: Gavin Young (No. 15) and Jacob Bickersteth (No. 125). The two are also ranked as a doubles pair (No. 27).
