Cary, N.C. – The No. 18 Florida State men’s tennis team (18-7, 8-4) defeated Clemson 4-0 in the second round of ACC Championships on Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
“I thought that it was a good effort today. We got off to a quick start on No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, Antoine and Josh got an early break as did Maks Silagy and Barnaby Smith” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Smith and Silagy played excellent today and got an early 6-1 win, and then Antoine served out to win confidently to get the early lead”.
Florida State secured a 1-0 lead after winning on court No. 1 and court No. 3.
Silagy and Smith opened doubles play with a 6-1 win on court No. 3.
Playing at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season, Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif cruised to a 6-3 win, marking their ninth in the last 10 outings.
Youcef Rihane opened singles scoring for the Seminoles with a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set-victory on court No. 3.
Petrovic secured his 13th win of the spring, making it 3-0 after a 6-2, 6-3 win on court No. 5.
The match was clinched by Cornut-Chauvinc on court No. 1 after he defeated No. 93 Ryuhei Azuma 6-4, 6-2. It was his 11th win over a ranked opponent.
“Clemson was battling and there was one stage where we were only up on two of the six courts, but I thought we really took control of the match and won all six first sets” Hultquist said. “I am really pleased with Rihane today, him and Petrovic were really quick off, and Antoine played a really strong second set to win 6-2.”
Florida State will play No. 4 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
