Nirundorn Continues Success at Bedford Cup


GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Four members of the Florida men’s tennis team opened action at the Bedford Cup on Friday at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.

Tanapatt Nirundorn and Francesco Cordova logged two singles wins for the Gators in the Round of 32 and the Round of 16. Cordova defeated Stavros Hadijvarnava (FGCU) in a 7-5, 6-3 effort to advance to the Round of 16. Cordova faced a loss against Segundo Goity Zapico (FAU) Friday afternoon. Cordova dropped the first set 3-6 and trailed 3-5 in the second before the match was retired.

Nirundorn opened singles in the Round of 16 against Thomas Pavlekovich-Smith (USF). The Florida veteran left no room for doubt as he secured a 6-2,6-4 straight set victory to move to the Quarterfinals. Nirundorn will face Andreas Scott on Saturday at 1 PM.

Kevin Edengren comepeted against Eder Blanco Fernandez (Stetson) and saw thrilling three set match. Edengren took the first set 6-3, but Fernandez responded in the second clinching a 7(8)-6(6) win. Edengren was outlasted by Fernandez in the final set, dropping 3-6.

Mattia Akcan also saw his match against Elias Sumann (FSU) extended to three sets. Akcan secured the first set 7(7)-6(4), but Sumann fought back in the second taking the set 6-4. Akcan battled in the third but ultimately fell to Sumann 5-7.

On the doubles side, pair Cordova/Akcan fell to Jan Sebesta/Elias Sumann in a 2-6 effort. The pair will compete in a Quarterfinals Consolation match against Olivier Lucas/ Kartik Mandla on Saturday.
