ATLANTA, Ga. – Ole Miss men’s tennis got underway in Atlanta on Friday for the annual Georgia Tech Invitational hosted at Georgia Tech’s Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
The Rebels closed out day one splitting their matches on the day, as the team finished the opening round of competition with a record of 2-2 in singles and 1-1 in doubles. Senior Nikola Slavic ended his day undefeated, capturing wins in both his singles and doubles matches to open his weekend.
To open Friday’s slate of matches for the Rebels, Slavic teamed up with Lukas Engelhardt to secure the team’s first win of the day, taking home an 8-5 victory over Georgia’s duo of Giusca/Johnston.
The Rebels’ other doubles pairing, Walker Stearns and Gordon Whitwell, fought through a tough opening round matchup with Vanderbilt’s Deames/Ferreira. Despite their best efforts, Stearns and Whitwell ultimately fell 8-6 to the Vanderbilt squad.
Moving to singles play, Slavic kept his momentum from doubles running right into his next match as he squared up against Georgia Tech’s Keshav Chopra. After three sets of hard-fought action against Chopra, Slavic put the final nail into his opponent to capture a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 match victory, finishing his day undefeated.
Rebel sophomore Walker Stearns followed this up for Ole Miss with a win of his own on the singles courts, coming back from a set down to defeat Paul Wang (Vanderbilt) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The victory marks the first singles win of the 2022-23 season for the Germantown, Tennessee, native.
Lukas Engelhardt and Gordon Whitwell rounded out singles action for Ole Miss on day one, with each Rebel dropping their respective matches 6-2, 6-1.
The whole squad will return to action once again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT in Atlanta, with another round of doubles play to start off the day followed by a round of singles.
