Men's Tennis Earns Third Place in Diablos College Invitational


TEMPE– No. 23 Arizona State Men’s Tennis (10-5) defeated No. 36 Michigan (6-9) on Sunday to earn third place in the Diablos College Invitational. This marks Arizona State’s second 4-2 victory over Michigan in as many weeks. 

Today’s win has the Sun Devils sitting at 10 on the season which marks the third straight season that the team has reached 10 wins. 

ASU took the first doubles match with a 6-2 set from Murphy Cassone and Jacob Bullard. Trailing 5-2 on court three, Daniel Phillips and Nicola Cigna rallied back to earn a 7-5 victory and the doubles point for ASU which had the home team up 1-0. 

In singles, Jacob Bullard earned a big 7-5, 6-3 victory on court four to match the Wolverines’ win on court six. After the Sun Devils dropped court one, Roi Ginat bounced back from a tough second set to take court five in the third set. Needing one more match to end the day, Bor Artnak came through in the second and third sets to deliver a Sun Devil victory.

  4. Jacob Bullard (ASU) def. Will Cooksey (UM) 7-5, 6-3 

  5. Roi Ginat (ASU) def. Bjorn Swenson (UM) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2     

  6. Nicholas Steiglehner (UM) def. Daniel Phillips (ASU) 6-3, 6-1

Order of finish: 6,4,1,5,2

DOUBLES:

  1. #26 Bor Artnak/Max McKennon (ASU) vs. #30 Gavin Young/Bjorn Swenson (UM) 6-5 unfinished

  2. Murphy Cassone/Jacob Bullard (ASU) def. Will Cooksey/Jacob Bickersteth (UM) 6-3

  3. Daniel Phillips/Nicola Cigna (ASU) def. Nino Ehrenschneider/Alex Cairo (UM) 7-5
