Jacobs, Carter Rally Again, Into Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – One day after upsetting the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country, new Husky duo Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter had a successful encore, beating the 27th-ranked tandem in the country move into the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships. They’re the first Huskies to reach this point in the tourney since 2016.

Carter and Jacobs are playing their first matches together, as Carter joined the Dawgs from Arizona this season. The ITA All-American Championships are the first and largest national tourney on the collegiate tennis calendar. The Huskies are one win away from reaching the semifinals, which would also automatically qualify them for the NCAA Doubles Championships, which are held at the end of the fall season for the first time this year.

For the second match in a row, Carter and Jacobs fell down a set, but battled back and then prevailed in the decisive 10-point tiebreaker. Facing South Carolina’s Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella, the Dawgs lost set one, 1-6, but answered with a 6-3 second set win. The pulled out to an 8-3 lead in the tiebreak before surviving a late Gamecock run to finish it out, 10-8.

The last Huskies to reach the quarterfinals in the All-American Championships were Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi in 2016. The only other Huskies to reach the quarters were Denise Dy and Joyce Ardies in 2009.

Tomorrow, the Huskies will play UCLA’s Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific.

Carter and Jacobs both were unable to get on track in singles earlier in the day in the consolation rounds. Carter lost in straight sets to 14th-ranked Amelia Honer of UC Santa Barbara, and Jacobs fell in straight sets to 83rd-ranked Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer of UCLA.
