Illini Secure Nine Wins at Drobac/Beeman Invite


CHAMPAIGN, Ill – Illinois men’s tennis left East Lansing, Mich. with nine wins at the Drobac/Beeman Invite from Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 hosted by Michigan State. 

Day one

Sophomore transfer Mathis Debru started off the victories when he defeated Notre Dame’s Jameson Corsillo 6-1, 3-0 (ret.) before freshman Kenta Miyoshi picked up a 5-7, 6-2, 10-1, win against Fighting Irish, Braeden Ho. 

Freshman Tyler Bowers won his first collegiate match against the host school’s Reed Crocker, 6-2, 6-2. 

Lucas Horve battled until the end against Michigan State’s Anthony Pero, ultimately falling, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9. 

In doubles play, Miyoshi and Debru went 2-0 when they beat Notre Dame’s Ho and Corsillo and Michigan State’s David Saye and Kazuki Matsuno, 6-1.

Horve and Bowers took one apiece after beating Michigan State’s Pero and Crocker 6-2 and falling to Michigan’s Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul, 6-1. 

Day two 

Debru carried his momentum into the next by defeating Matsuno, 6-4, 6-2. However, the Frenchman dropped his second match of the day to Michigan’s Bjorn Swenson, 6-4, 6-3. 

Miyoshi also battled a Spartan in singles, beating Saye 6-4, 6-3, but dropping his other match to Michigan’s Andrew Fenty, 6-0, 6-2.

Horve defeated Northwestern’s Saiprakash Goli, 4-6, 6-2, 12-10, but lost his other match 6-4, 6-3, to Cooksey. 

“With this being my first tournament back this fall,” Horve said, “these matches were exactly what I needed to get back in the physical and mental shape that I need to be in.”

Bowers lost both his singles matches on the day, one to Hanchaikul 6-7, 6-0, 10-2, and the other to Max Bengtsson, 6-3, 6-0. 

Day three

Debru picked up his third win at the tournament after outlasting Western Michigan’s Peter Kuszynski, 3-6, 6-2, 13-11. 

Miyoshi, Bowers and Horve each lost their singles match – Miyoshi to Western Michigan’s Anton Arzhankin, 6-4, 6-2, Bowers to Notre Dame’s Noah Becker, 6-3, 6-4, and Horve to Notre Dame’s Brian Bilsey, 6-2, 6-4. Bisley and Becker also defeated, 6-4, Bowers and Horve, in doubles. 

Miyoshi and Debru also dropped their doubles match to Arzhankin and Kuszynski, 6-3.
