Illini Close Out ITA All-Americans, Bobby Bayliss

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Ten men’s tennis Illini have closed the book at two different tournaments, six at the ITA All-Americans Championships in Tulsa, Okla. and four at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational in South Bend, Ind. 

ITA All-American Championships

Sophomore Kenta Miyoshi made it to the Round of 32 before being knocked out by TCU’s Jack Pinnington, 6-3, 6-2. 

Karlis Ozolins and Hunter Heck cruised to the semifinals in doubles play, but eventually lost to Texas’ Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper, 2-6, 6-3, (10-4). 

Lucas Horve and Oliver Okonkwo battled their way from pre qualifying to the main draw in doubles, but lost to Columbia’s Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.  

Heck also made it to the main draw from pre qualifying, but lost in the Round of 64 to SMU’s Adam Neff. 

Bobby Bayliss Invitational 

Mathis Debru, William Mroz, Tyler Bowers and Jeremy Zhang collected a combined 13 wins at the invitational hosted by Notre Dame. 

Debru and Mroz picked up a doubles win in their first time pairing up this fall, with a 6-4 win over Notre Dame’s Chase Thompson and Evan Lee. 

Freshman Zhang continues to succeed in his first collegiate fall tennis, picking up three total wins over the weekend.
