SPOKANE, Wash. — Three Huskies earned the first wins of the fall season today as the men’s tennis team began the year at ITA Northwest Regionals, hosted by Gonzaga. Rikuto Yamaguchi and Han-Chih Lin both moved into the round of 16, while freshman Brett Pearson had his first career victory.

Pearson, a Kirkland, Wash. product, battled hard for the year’s first win, as he pulled out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Gonzaga’s Pablo Gomez Galvan. Pearson came up just short of forcing another third set in round two, falling 6-3, 7-6 against Seattle’s Clement Hamel, a fifth-year senior.

Four Dawgs had byes into the second round. Lin, seeded No. 2 overall, had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Eastern Washington’s Drew Dillon. Yamaguchi earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Michael Frank of Seattle U. Nedim Suko dropped a 7-6 (3), 6-3 match to Oregon’s August Gustafson, while redshirt freshman Jacob Sleight fell in his first collegiate match, 6-2, 6-2, against No. 9-16 seed Jan Semerak.
