SAN DIEGO – The UCLA men’s tennis team completed the fall portion of its 2022-23 schedule Sunday at Barnes Tennis Center, where Alexander Hoogmartens took part in the ITA National Fall Championships.
Hoogmartens, a sophomore, earned a spot in the singles draw when he posted a runner-up finish at October’s ITA Southwest Regional Championships. He would win twice at the national event en route to the consolation final round.
In his Fall Nats debut, No. 23 Hoogmartens was bested by Casey Hoole of South Carolina 6-3, 6-0. He quickly bounced back, though, handing David Cierny of Utah State a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the opening round of consolation play. The quarterfinal round saw Hoogmartens get past Southwest Regionals singles champion and No. 41 Peter Makk of USC by way of walkover. Oklahoma’s Nathan Han was next on Hoogmartens’ journey and the Bruin would prevail by a 6-3, 7-5 score. Then, in the final, Hoogmartens had his run stopped by Michael Zheng of Columbia in a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Hoogmartens completed his fall with an overall singles record of 7-4. The seven singles wins represent a team high. He went 2-2 against nationally-ranked singles opponents, proving victorious versus No. 46 Gustaf Strom of Arizona and No. 45 Tim Zeitvogel of Pepperdine at Regionals. On the doubles side, redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Fradkin and redshirt senior Patrick Zahraj tied for the team lead with five wins each.
