Hokies move onto second round of ACC Championships


Cary, N.C. – The Hokies move onto the second round of the ACC Championship with a 4-2 win over Louisville on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
Charlotte Cartledge and Özlem Uslu collected a doubles win for the Hokies but the Cardinals were able to outlast Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng in the tiebreak to clinch the point. 
 
The Hokies responded positively in singles, collecting four wins to take the match. Dariya Radulova returned to the singles lineup on Court 5 and did not miss a beat, sweeping Berta Miret 6-3, 6-1, to start Tech off on the right foot. On Court 1, Uslu followed shortly after with another sweep as she took down Jamilah Snells 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. 
 
On Court 6, Laima Frosch mounted a two-set comeback over Allie Gretkowski, to pick up the Hokies’ third point. After going down 7-5 in the first set, Frosch returned to win the following two sets 6-3, 6-4. 
 
Aksu clinched the match for the Hokies after a gritty battle with Lillian Mould on Court 3. She started out with a 4-0 win in the first-set tiebreak, before dropping the second set 6-2. Aksu was able to turn it around in the third set as she took it 6-3 to win it for the Hokies. 
 
Tamara Barad Itzhaki was on the verge of adding another win for the Hokies on Court 4, but her match was called while she was up 5-3 in the third set. 
 
UP NEXT: The 11th-seeded Hokies are moving on to the second round of the ACC Championship where they will face the #6 seed of Miami, in a rematch of the final match of the regular season, on Thursday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
